DMLS 3D Printing Overview

DMLS is an industrial metal additive manufacturing process. A high-power laser fuses fine metal powder layer by layer to fabricate high-precision metal components.

The technology supports complex shapes, elaborate internal structures and lightweight structures that cannot be easily manufactured by traditional methods. DMLS produces robust functional metal parts with outstanding mechanical properties, suitable for sectors requiring strict precision and performance.

DMLS Material Options

DMLS Material Options
Aluminum (AlSi10Mg)
Cobalt Chrome (Co28Cr6Mo)
Stainless Steel (316L)
Inconel 718/625
Titanium (Ti6Al4V)

Aluminum (AlSi10Mg)

Comparable to 3000-series casting alloy. Features excellent strength-to-weight ratio, heat and corrosion resistance, plus reliable fatigue and creep performance. Parts undergo stress relief for enhanced dimensional stability.

Cobalt Chrome (Co28Cr6Mo)

Cobalt-chromium superalloy with high tensile strength, outstanding creep and corrosion resistance. Widely adopted for aerospace structures and medical instruments working under sustained load.

Stainless Steel (316L)

Higher malleability than 17-4 PH stainless steel. Ideal for applications requiring good ductility and deformation resistance. Stress relief treatment improves component stability.

Inconel 718/625

Nickel-based superalloys for high-performance scenarios. Inconel 718 delivers robust strength, corrosion resistance and durability under extreme temperature and mechanical stress, suitable for aerospace and industrial components.

Titanium (Ti6Al4V)

High-performance lightweight alloy with superior strength-to-weight ratio. Mechanical properties match annealed Grade 23 wrought titanium, fit for rigorous industrial applications.

DMLS 3D printing post-processing

Surface finishing treatments for 3D printed components boost the visual quality, tactile feel and functional properties of manufactured parts. Treatments ranging from surface smoothing to specialized coating elevate visual appeal, strengthen durability and optimize performance, readying components for end-use applications or exhibition.

01

Sanding (Standard)

Smooths edges, minimises layer lines and removes residual support marks.

02

Spray Painting

Efficient colour coating that reaches complex hard-to-access geometries.

03

Plating

Improves visual appearance, creates reflective surfaces and delivers corrosion protection.

04

Heat Treatment

Controlled thermal processing to relieve internal stress and optimise mechanical properties.

05

Passivation

Removes free iron from metal surfaces to boost corrosion resistance.

06

Powder Coating

Electrostatic powder coating forms a durable outer layer against scratches and corrosion.

07

Secondary Machining

Precision secondary operations including fine bore finishing, tapping and threaded hole machining to meet tight dimensional tolerances.
